2018年1月9日，十位欧洲天文学家共同在《皇家天文学会月报》（Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society）杂志发表论文——《在球状星团NGC 3201中一个可能的单独恒星级质量黑洞》（“A detached stellar-mass black hole candidate in the globular cluster NGC 3201”），报告了他们利用位于智利的极大望远镜（Very Large Telescope）上装载的多单元光谱探测器（Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer）所做出的发现。
